Physical Science in Motion: Classroom Applications

Target Grade(s): 5 to high school

Overview:

Physical science activities in this course focus on one-dimensional motion, forces and aerodynamic principles. Participants will use free, simple-to-use, software simulations from NASA Glenn, which help to present these concepts in the context of aeronautics, including airplane design, rocketry, sports, and more.

Physical science, when applied, makes tough-to-understand concepts easy and fun.

Course Objectives:

  • To solve problems relating to one-dimensional motion
  • To become acquainted with Newton's Laws of motion and equilibrium of forces
  • To learn about constant acceleration and gravitational acceleration
  • To introduce concepts in aerodynamics
  • To introduce two-dimensional motion
  • To learn how to use modeler programs in the classroom to teach these concepts
  • To utilize the educational and scientific resources developed by NASA

LIVE Sessions:

Session 1: Topics: Get Going! One-dimensional motion and introduction to forces
Session 2: Topics: Kites and Rockets: Introduction to aerodynamics, continuation of forces and acceleration
Session 3: Topics: Flying High: Lift and the effects of the atmosphere on flight
Session 4: Topic: Integrating Topics: Baseball and aerodynamics

Additional Study:

After the interactive sessions, participants select from a variety of assignments in order to complete the necessary hours to earn credit for the course. Assignment choices include:

  • Completing a survey of current research in the field of Physical Science at a particular grade level.
  • Conducting additional background research on scientific topics outlined in the course.
  • Writing a unit plan to include Physical Science elements and a particular focus into regular instruction.
  • Implementing NASA and Department of Energy lessons into the classroom and assessing the impact on teaching and learning.

Participants Receive:

  • Free software, ideas for implementation of new activities with traditional content and much more
  • A comprehensive web-based resource center on motion
