Technology

VoiceThread
Free site for uploading and collaborating on media (Powerpoint, PDF, video, etc.). Students can create projects, digital stories, documentaries, and more, and can comment on each other's work either textually or orally.

Blog sites
Free sites for writing, posting pictures and videos, and commenting on posted work. Gets kids writing and expressing themselves and allows conversation and dialogue.

Concept Maps
Inexpensive software and websites for creating diagrams showing relationships between facts, ideas, and concepts. Facilitates better conceptualization and comprehension.

Google Earth
Free virtual globe and mapping software which allows the superimposing of features such as images and information. Many projects have already been set up from around the world and are free to use. Second link includes ideas for educators.

Field Museum of Chicago
Explore the far reaches of the Earth with explorers from the Field Museum. Learn about tools used to uncover ancient remains, view interactive maps, watch videos from the field and meet the scientists involved.

NOAA Hurricane Tracks
Track the path of a hurricane in any region of the world. Plot latitude and longitude on student maps, learn about categories of hurricanes and collect additional data for student activities.

Ocean

U.S. Satellite Laboratory ACES
Use satellite data to teach formal science in the context of the ocean. The full curriculum is available through training in Endeavor's Life and Marine Science: Tracking Live Marine Animals course.

National Buoy Data Center
Zoom in to a specific buoy to obtain several data points: location, wind sped, atmospheric pressure, air and water temperature, etc. Compare current data to past data to look for trends.
